#CopChat Smile… you’re on camera

No one can argue the value of video in almost everything around us nowadays.  You can’t turn around it seems without seeing an advisory that you are in the vicinity of surveillance cameras, see someone with a camera, emailed a video from YouTube, etc, etc, etc.

Video is all around us and with very good reason.  It captures the entirety of an event; or does it?

Some video comes without sound, some comes without a beginning, some without an end and all is generally from a fixed perspective.  So is video really all that good? Can it be relied upon?

Sure a great quality picture, fantastic video in hi-def from beginning to end without edits and without the subjects ever leaving the frame would be the pinnacle, but even then, there’s no smell, no other perspective than what’s on the screen…even then, is it really worth the weight we put into it?

Join us at 9pm Eastern Time / 6pm Pacific Time for the fastest hour on Twitter… #copchat, where we’ll be talking everything video.

The New Look Option For Your Twitter Presentation

In case you haven’t heard, Twitter did a little tweaking on the way you present yourself to the rest of the world!

You can now add a header to your profile or just keep it the old way.  The new look header takes centre’s your profile pic, allows for a custom background and moves your bio in front of the background.  The black home bar at the top of your page has also changed with a new button “ME” and the removal of the old “Head & Shoulder” silhouette, which is now the common gear like symbol which usually indicates a settings screen.

The new look

We all know there are people who aren’t going to be very happy about this, some will be ecstatic and naturally those the will be indifferent (as long as they don’t step backwards at Twitter).

Making the change is really simple provided you follow a few simple rules.  Click the fancy new button on the right beside the compose a tweet button and select “Settings” from the drop down.  Then click “Design” and scroll to the bottom where it says “Customize Your Own” and have at ‘er!

The minimum dimension for your custom header is 1252×626 and a maximum file size of 5MB… which actually gives you a good amount of room for play.

Draw back??? Well, depending on what tools you use to access your account, you may be in the dark until you hit up the web.  From the Twitter Blog;

Upload an all-new header photo on mobile apps for iPad, iPhone and Android or twitter.com, and the same image will appear whenever anyone views your profile on the web or these apps.

I can’t wait to see what some of you creative types do for your accounts.  What do you think of the new options? Let me know.  Also, if you see any new profiles that are taking full advantage of this, share them in the comments!

30 posts in 30 days…uh oh

Well, I fell off track with my 30 posts in 30 days.  My goal was 1 post per day to meet the challenge.

Truthfully, I really haven’t missed my goal.  I have actually written 19 posts in 18 days, but only 14 have made it to this blog.

My goal has been maintained, I just needed to be more specific with it.

Goal: 30 blog posts in 30 days

The goal was right on.  Clear, attainable and even including a timeline within the goal itself.  What it was lacking was specifics.

Goal: 30 blog posts on Walking the Social Media Beat in 30 days.

So… what do you do when you miss your goal?  You can give up, start over or adjust and power through to your achievements.  My choice….

POWER ON!

Continuing from where I left off… 30 blog posts in 30 days on this blog.  That means I have to write more than one blog post per day, still keeping on with the idea of not writing crap.

HERE WE GO!!!

You know you’ve scared people when…

A few months ago, #CopChat made its debut on Twitter.  Every Wednesday night at 9pm Eastern Time, since the inaugural Twitter chat, there has been a steady growth of community and police taking part with Christa Miller and myself.  The entire aim of #CopChat is to bring the community and police together to discuss challenges, triumphs and differences with one goal… building a better online relationship between the two groups which will transfer over to the physical world.

We’ve discussed things like:

  • The best ways to talk to each other for maximum understanding
  • The art of actually listening to each other
  • The manner in which police talk at the public instead of with the public
  • The similarities we share

Wednesday, August 29th ushered in a new chapter of #CopChat… haters came out of the woodwork like never before and attempted to hijack the conversation. (Transcript of the chat).

As much as I wanted to ignore these people, I owed it to the purity of the conversations to at least try to engage some of these people who really had nothing but foul and disgusting things to say.  There was no intention by many of these people to talk and build bridges.  Their intent was to bully, berate and insult the people who have been working together.

That was the signal to me that #CopChat is working.  It’s been noticed by some that the public and police can work together to bring about change in a positive and constructive manner.

What the haters did was It prove that some people are so afraid of peace and understanding that they had to try anything to kill the conversation.  All they know is disruption, fear tactics and hatred, that the simple thought of relationship building terrifies them.

These people were not just insulting to the police and our way of life, but also to members of the public who defended the police, who support the ideal of #CopChat and didn’t take up the hue and cry of the haters.

To each and every person who has been striving to build these relationships, I say THANK YOU!!!

To each and every person who is defending everyone’s choice to voice their opinion and listen respectfully to the opinions of others, I say THANK YOU!!

To each and every police officer that had the guts to take a stand and defend our profession, way of life and values, I say THANK YOU!!

To each and every member of the public who stands for your beliefs and has the guts to listen and work with the police for a better level of understanding of cooperation, I say THANK YOU!!

To all of you who took abuse from the likes of the people we saw on Wednesday night but stood your ground, tried to talk and showed incredible patience and respect, I say THANK YOU!!

To the members and supporters of the Occupy and Anonymous movements that understand hatred and accusations will not further your efforts and instead are trying to find a better, peaceful and effective way to move your respective causes forward, I say THANK YOU!!

To those who are trying to destroy our efforts with your pew of hatred and hostility, I say GOOD LUCK.  Everyone knows you’re scared and you’re failing… your desperation is self-evident of that.

Have you ever considered “Perspective”

This morning while my son and I were eating breakfast we got talking about football (the North American kind, oblong ball, helmets, pads…you know).

Football, not Football.

He asked me a question about pass coverage and how he should be set up when the team is passing.

I gave him my best 27 years of experience (player, coach, fan) answer and he looked at me like I had a hole in my head.  I repeated my answer and I could tell he still had no clue what I was talking about.

He then said one of things that makes you pause for a moment to re-evaluate, “Dad, you have no clue what I’m talking about do you?”  Funny, he said to me what I was thinking about him.

I answered his question perfectly.  I have the knowledge skills and abilities to do so.  he’s been playing for 8 months… how dare he say I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Enter “Perspective”

The problem was, he was asking from his defensive position and I was answering from his offensive position.  Perspective…. where you are looking from can dramatically change the answer.

How many of us truly understand what the question is we are being asked by the public?  How can the public not get our answers?  We have the authority, the experience and the knowledge, skills and abilities… who are they to question us?

First answer… they are our community so they have every right to question us.

Second answer… are we looking at the question from their perspective or from ours?  The views can be very different which can lead to very different answers.

Why is it blue?
Perspective will determine the proper answer

I used to get so frustrated with one of my supervisors when I was a detective because I would ask him a question and he would ask me 20 in return.  He would NEVER answer my question until he knew EXACTLY what it was I was asking.  The result: I became better at asking questions and he gave the right answer every time because he actually knew what the question was, the perspective it was being viewed from and all the issues surrounding the question.

Think about answering questions from your community with the same mindset:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions back
  • Explain to them you want to remove any doubt about what is being asked
  • Your goal is to answer the question without confusion or answering from the wrong perspective.

The vast majority of the public doesn’t have any idea why we do things or the way we do them.  So when they as a question, it may seem like our authority is being challenged when the reality is; maybe the real answer is just being sought.

The #CopChat topic for Wednesday September 12 is…

Wednesday 9PM, Eastern time#CopChat this week will be looking at a specific tool for allowing for greater outreach and depth to conversations.

BLOGGING!!

Image via Blog.HubSpot.com

Christa and I both enjoy the benefits of blogging both writing for ourselves and responding to other blogs.  Reading what other people have to say,  the opinions and views of the crowd allow for the possibility of increased understanding of what other people have to say.  Lets face it, blogging is bigger than 140 characters, more accessible than a status update and with the addition of multi media, blogs can truly be brought to life.

Blogs can be used for virtually any situation from the mundane and irrelevant to  emergency management and crisis communications.

We’ll discuss and explore how police and law enforcement are using blogs, how the community is blogging and look at ways to maximize the vice and efforts of blogging.

Looking forward to seeing you all… 9pm Eastern Time, Wednesday night.

September 11, 2001. I will always remember… will you?

Always rememberSeptember 11, 2001.

Do you remember where you were?  Do you remember what you were doing?  Did you find yourself glued to a television?  Were you angry?  Were you sad?  Can you describe the shock you felt?

11 years later… do you still think back to the horror that unfolded during the morning of that clear and sunny day?

I will never forget, I will always remember.  I will forever pay tribute and honour to the first responders that ran in while others were running out.

I will never forget, I will always remember the volunteers who travelled from near and far to help in the search and rescue efforts.

I will never forget, I will always remember the faces, the sorrow, the tears and the heartbreak of those who lost loved ones.

I will never forget, I will always support, “If you see it, say it.” and report anything that I believe to be worth a closer look by authorities.

I will never forget, I will always remember… will you?

Never forget

Facebook Notifications… do you use them?

I took a little time off work recently which included no Blackberry while I was off.  Yes, I was in heaven without it.  When I returned to work, I opened my email and I was floored by the number of unread messages in my inbox.  What was more surprising was the number of them that were Facebook Notifications.

I had never really noticed how many I received when I had me BB with me because I could just read / delete them as they came in.  It caused me to take a look at what email notifications I receive from FB.

In the end, I didn’t change a thing. I’m happy with what I get notified of.  Now, I might receive a few more than the average person because of the number of pages I admin and I have a role that requires a little more risk management and mitigation so I have a few notifications turned on than the average user might not.

Here is the Notification stuff…

1.) Know where to look for your notifications.

Timeline Notifications

2.) It doesn’t matter whether you’re in Timeline or Newsfeed, you’ll be notified of Notifications, Friend Requests or Messages in the same location (Upper Left Corner)

Newsfeed Notifications

3.) To ensure you have Notifications configured the way you want, start by clicking on the drop down arrow on the right side of the Facebook bar.

How to get to Notification Settings

4.) Click on “Security” (left side) to see the first notification that you should have on, “Login Notifications”.  You’ll always be notified when your account is accessed… this is a good thing to know in case you aren’t the one logging on!

Make sure Login Notifications are turned on

5.) Next click on the “Notifications” tab to access the meat and potatoes of the Facebook Notifications.

Facebook Notifications 1

6.) Below the most recent notifications you’ve received, are the all importance “All Notification” choices.  You choose how many you want on or off based on your needs and the amount of duplication you want.

Facebook Notifications 2

You receive notifications on both the Timeline and Newsfeed when you log in to your account, so why the email notifications as well?

Depending on where and when you receive your email, you could be way ahead of your game by getting emails delivered when you aren’t actually on Facebook and that could be a big difference depending on the circumstances or what you’re being notified of.

Fantastic Friday

It’s been a few weeks since I did a Fantastic Friday post.  It’s not that there hasn’t been anything fantastic to write about, just that finding the time to write has been a challenge.  Then along came Dave Jaffer ( @combatdavey ) who threw out a #30Posts challenge that I took on.  Now, to save face, I have had to find the time to write.  What I’ve realized is that finding the time is the hard part…. prioritizing the time though , is the easy part.

So part 1 of this Fantastic Friday is to Dave for helping light a fire under my time line to get me focused.  (By the way, this is 7 posts in 7 days). Also to Anita_Chauhan dawndoth saracampbell76 who are also in the #30posts challenge.  Congratulations to you all for giving it a go!

Part 2 of this Fantastic Friday post is to an ideal that is seen in two people.  It’s more than just a couple of people though.  It’s a mission, a movement, a better way of doing things that we don’t always appreciate enough and why I started writing a Fantastic Friday post series…

#BeGreat

Kevin Curwick, a 17-year-old senior who’s the football captain at Osseo High School in Minnesota got tired of seeing the bullying and negative attitude in people and in his own way decided to combat the bullies by giving the world the opposite attack method.  Kevin anonymously started @OsseoNiceThings on Twitter.

Once the movement spread and the media got wind of what was happening Kevin revealed his identity and the reasons that he started the campaign.  Kevin says that he has never been the target of bullies, but what he was seeing happening to other people, “just hit me the wrong way.” So he’s done something about it…

Kevin, way to go!  Read a great story about Kevin here.

Keeping in line with the same idea, here is another example.

@ThPositiveTroll

In an article from the Huffington Post, UK edition, @ThPositiveTroll is described this way;

“Positive Troll hasn’t been tweeting long – but he/she is already delighting us with his/her positive take on life, which often take the form of tweets to celebrities – and mere mortals – as well as the occasional pep talk to us all.

You can turn and look anywhere on the Internet now-a-days and find plenty of negative stuff everywhere.  I love seeing the positive that comes around.  I applaud these people for what they (and many, many others ) are doing.

Have a great weekend everyone and #BeGreat!!
